Do you also have a problem with this?

Let's talk about protecting your IP

Hi - so you’re probably not aware of this, but several months back, Adobe basically hijacked and tried to claim IP rights on all the creative content that had been generated by its users. They ran an extensive PR campaign to try to keep user unrest below the radar, but it was all over X, which is why I know about it.

Reports claimed that – according to the new terms & conditions - Adobe was attempting to claim full IP rights of users’ data so that they could then use that data as source data for Adobe’s own generative AI models.

Creatives who wanted to quickly access and remove their IP from Adobe products reported that Adobe was forcing them to consent to the new terms & conditions in order to simply access and remove their own creative.  Crazy, right?!

It was a whole thing, and if you weren’t already aware, then you probably should learn more about it here, here, and here (within Adobe’s own user forum). As you can see, it’s a mess.

Even yesterday, I went to open a PDF file and noticed a new generative AI widget asking me if I want to ask questions of the document. Using this feature would surely imply my consent to Adobe AI ingesting my data, but of course they don’t state that fact on the widget.

Obviously, I no longer trust the Adobe brand – not to mention the fact that they’ve priced themselves out of the market.

So, last month I went on the hunt for tools that replace Adobe Acrobat and facilitate basic contracting requirements without requiring users to handover their IP and fistfuls of cash to pay for a recurring subscription.

And after a bit of researching and testing, I finally stumbled upon these gems:

Signable – A contracting service that facilitates legally defensible signing of business agreements. This product is pay-as-you-go, meaning I don’t have to pay a silly monthly subscription fee for a service I rarely need to use. I believe I am paying $0.99 per signed envelope now – that and they do not run genAI models on my PDF data. Winning!

UPDF - This tool is available via a lifetime deal for $59 on AppSumo, and basically replaces all the standard Adobe Acrobat features.

Since finding these tools, I’ve been able to decrease risk and save money while seamlessly signing several new client and partnership agreements.

If you weren’t aware of these issues with Adobe products, it may be worth getting up to speed. If you decide that you too want out, at least you now know how to replace Adobe Acrobat, and save money while doing so.

All the best,

Lillian

P.S. What’s your favorite tool for video creative? I haven’t figured out the Adobe Premiere replacement piece yet.
